"Music has national boundaries" says a pianist Mitsuko Uchida. It is because music is closely tied with language and living environment. This year, JAO holds the world festival. To tell the truth, it is a big task for us.
As Japanese musicians continued to go overseas, there was a time that people were seriously concerned that all the positions of conductors, soloists and orchestras might be taken by Japanese. But the fact is the Japanese musicians are not as recognized at the top level as people had expected. While they have caught up and passed the forerunners technically, the issue now is the level of the basic quality of music such as the sensitivity, susceptibility and spirit which can not be explained by words.
The same problem applies to the amateur orchestras as well. In the last few years, the technical level of the orchestras has made a remarkable progress . And I believe that JAO had a substantial contribution through its activities such as the festivals and TOYOTA Community Concerts. Today, going abroad on a concert tour is not rare anymore even for the amateurs.
But, this is the time for each of us to open our ears and listen carefully to the sound we create. Whether or not we can cross the Rational boundaries of music under the guidance of Mr. Murvitz and Messrs. Tsutsumi and Hirokami, who have abundant experiences abroad, we will find the answer very soon.
